Pottery Studio Vlog Episode 5 | Underglaze Decals, Glazes, Extruded Pottery, Texture Tools Unboxing
Welcome to another week in the pottery studio.
Monday we took a day away from the studio and celebrated our Anniversary with a day trip to Lake George, NY.
Let there be (more) lighter! We installed new studio lights and added some overhead lights to make the filming area brighter and to get rid of some distracting shadows on my filming work table!
I am developing a few new glaze colors for Fall. I am really into olive green right now and am trying to get the perfect shade. Which green do you like best on the test tile the bunny(left) or tile pattern (right). Or do they look the same lol. Maybe I need to step away from the greens for a bit.
Bead week is coming July 8-14 and I am finishing up ...

Pottery Studio Vlog episode 2. Surviving birthday week, open studio weekend and 7 kiln firings!
Просмотров 2,8 тыс.21 день назад
What a week this has been! I survived birthday week, Open Studio Weekend and fired my kilns 7 times(2 bisque and 5 glaze firings!) The Dare mug I made for my daughter turned out fabulous and she loved it. In so glad because it took 3 hours for me to paint the design on with underglazes. I didn’t all free hand and although I have pretty good drawing skills I only had one mug to put the design on...

How To Set the Bottom Kiln Shelf In Your Kiln
This might be helpful, i used to buy semi transluscent glazes, in green for floral imprints. The glaze was by western ceramics, n diff from regular transparents, n it was a mix of both, but mostly transluscents n some transparents, in the perfect mix it shows detail from carvings n in lines, w varying shades of dark n med dark colors, in line carved, this mix if done right, esp on floral green leaves is incredible aeller, so much better than what you r using, n trying to acheive, its in the mix, find okd guys n ask for formula nbtrick of how they made tgese secret glazes. Went way up w just a green the lines ot made werediff darknesses .
One of the best videos I’ve seen in a long time on mono-printing
I thought the app had free content?
I love Jeff! He's got the best spirit and energy
I have two jars of Oatmeal that have gone solid. How do I reconstitute?
Just bought the dragon stone excited to try out! Great video thank you
I absolutely want them. Where can I buy those decals
I like timers for plant lights. That way they get the same amount of light each day.
That deep sea blue/green test glaze is gorgeous!
Happy anniversary just found your channel and throwing pottery ❤️❤️🙏👏👏
Thanks! I’m glad you found me! I have a bunch of wheel throwing demos here on RUclips and if you want full length step by step classes I have dozens just on wheel throwing over on ClayShare.com ☺️
Oh my God, scary story about the kiln. I am glad you got out 😢
I was a bit scared but luckily I had a cordless phone on me and was able to call Kevin for help!
You should include your cats in your Vlog . I love cats 🐈 😻 and dogs and all animals 😅
I should! I love animals too! 😻
😊
❤️🥰
Jess, Yes Yes Yes! UGtransfers of your drawings! For Sure!
I think it’s a great idea too! I will do it!☺️
Okay…so this is apparently not the place to get more information about your program.
All of the info about this workshop is available here www.clayshare.com/products/whimsical-garden-stacks-3-making-birds
The mayco glazes came out so beautiful - all three of the combos
Thank you!
Will this workshop be interactive?
Yes! It will be live then the replay will be actions to watch as a replay later.
Thanks so much for getting back to me Jessica. I’ve been watching your RUclips videos for a while, but somehow I hadn’t seen one previewing a class before. I’m going to sign up! I miss having a community of “clay people“ since I moved back to my hometown after living in Santa Fe, NM for 17 years! We all have so much to learn from and be inspired by each other.
I make 10’ totems using a copper grounding rod which is only one foot in the ground. I’ve had one in my backyard for 12 years. No problems other than I tend to kick my dogs’ soccer ball into it and have broken a couple of pieces. 😣😬
Good to know! I have not made any tall garden stacks yet but it’s on my to make list!☺️
I don’t see the sculpture clay on Georgie’s site
Here is the link to the page with Georgie’s clay. Scroll down and you’ll see the Timberline Sculptural Clay. www.georgies.com/gcc-clay-mid.shtml
So many ceramic suppliers going away! 😢
I know, it’s so sad.😞
How is the clay she is referring to spelled?
It’s Timberline sculpture clay
Can’t wait until prime time this week looks fun ❤
It’s going to be so much fun!
Can't wait!!!
I can’t wait to share it with you and everyone!☺️
Will you be taping the class for youtube?
This will be a recorded premium class for ClayShare members. ☺️
Hi and I have really enjoyed watching your video and can I kindly please ask of where you get the shaped cutters for those plates please? And thankyou 🤭😀
I use rim templates from claysharemarket.com along with cutters from deladesigngifts.com and some I made myself from cardboard.
Hi Jess! Get yourself a big backdrop. It will be perfekt behind the kilns or with only you and a pot. Think that's best because nothing will steel the show from the important stuff. It's you and the pot. And please , you don't need a "silly" (sorry!) smile. Just be yourself, as.we all know you. Good luck ! Greeting from Europe!
Thanks for the suggestions! 🙏🏻☺️
I love watching your vlogs. You are always so happy go lucky and enjoying yourself. I love how you are just being you. Thrown in with (ha ha pun) your witty comments and excitement over products. And you are very photogenic indeed. Your posing in the vlog was so fun. A photo taken at that time, just being you would have worked. BTW red suits you. Happy potting in the studio
Thanks for watching and the feedback I really appreciate it!
I love the outfit and the necklace...do you have a workshop on the necklace
Yes! The necklace class is here : www.clayshare.com/sculpted-flower-brooch-or-pendant
I didn’t know you can use raku glaze in an electric kiln! Looking forward to that class. 😊
It’s a game changer for those who want to do Raku firing but only have an electric kiln! We will be doing microwave Raku this coming week then Raku in an electric kiln the last week of June or first week of July. I’ll post when it will happen as we get closer. ☺️
I have done many rakufirings in one of my electric kilns. Just a bit tricky to take it hot from the kiln. It takes 2 people. One pic the pot and the other open the lid. I have top loaded kilns. Much easier with front loaded. 😅
I’m loving the studio vlogs!
So glad you are enjoying the vlogs!
Good one, Jessica!
Thanks!
Background is too busy.
Which background are you referring to?
Use google to do your conversions from millimeter to inch and vice versa , easiest way to get it correct.
lol, good idea! Google is much smarter than me anyway!😂
Why did you join the armed forces, where did you serve and how long did you serve,? I am only interested in why you left the force, you do not need to answer, I am an avid follower. But like a lot of people we do want to know how you achieved such knowledge in such a small time frame. As a potter in Australia we do not have all the glazes that you paint on or other low fired glazes. I have one kiln that fires to ^7 and the other fires to ^9.Our clay fires to 7/9 but it vitrifies at cone seven.I think that we have to go back and regulate both kilns, we do have some(as always) know better. I do really appreciate the other potters that you showcase, even as I will not embrace the glaze that you do.I put that rather badly, We have to get them from the USA and the freight is out of bounds ,in my club we have several different "potters". there are the Ceramic ones who buy items to glaze and paint on.And then there are folk who handbuild and also throw. And we make our own glazes, these fire to cone 9 and at the moment we are exploring ^6/7 . our kilns are getting old, one is about 25 years and the other ,it was gifted to us but has to be at least 10 years old. The larger kiln, we rewired last year( Cost $700) aud and the Cress we had a new relay , thermocouple and computer cost was ($1100.), I am very excited to make some pots to fire and glaze for the Cress. Sorry for the waffle but even at my age I want to learn more. I did 7 years at college and I am now 84y so you can tell I came to pottery late.
Such great questions and I have answers but they are too long to type so I will do it in my AMA vlog episode I’ll be doing soon! ☺️
I don’t understand your language. Can you enable subtitles. Thanks
Yes, the replay will have subtitles.☺️
What is her website
It’s www.plumislandtransfers.com
It is so beautiful 🎉❤
Thank you!☺️
What type of wood do you make your templates with?
We use 1/4 mdf for our templates
Shadow blue snowflake with cream mug was my favorite - so pretty. I'm going to go find the mug topper video. I want to make one!
That is a great glaze combo and one of my favorites as well!
Is mother of pearl food safe? I though it has lead
It depends. I use Mayco Mother of Pearl which is food safe but some companies MOP may not be. Always read the label or check with the manufacture to be safe.☺️
@@JessicaPutnamPhillips thanks!!
Thanks for this confirmation! I plan to do this. Are those posts 1.5” x 1.5”? I’m buying shelves and posts for a small kiln (has 16” x 15” 8-sided shelves) and I saw 1” x 1” posts are available. I can’t seem to find any examples of that size and thought maybe those were them! Can’t get a picture of if 1” would be too small and feel unstable. Thanks for any insight.
The posts I use for the bottom are 1” tall
How can I buy one to ship to Australia? Please 😊
They ship worldwide just go to their website ceramicatransfers.com
You mentioned the expensive printer.. I have Invested... But not Happy about it....the cost of printing water slid paper... Etc.
I can understand not being happy with the cost. That is one reasons why I am still using a black and white laser printer and have not invested in a waterslide decal printer.
I am jealous of your walk to work as well.
Believe me I know who lucky I am!
@@JessicaPutnamPhillips Hard work always involves a little bit of luck, love it!
I can’t believe you don’t have more followers Jessica!! You have one the most informative and teaching channels on you tube… thanks!! ❤❤🇨🇦
Thanks for being one of the few who follow me! I guess I just have not figured out the RUclips algorithm. It’s ok because I love teaching and sharing all things clay!
I absolutely loved seeing your commute tour! Lol. What a beautiful space Jessica! I can’t wait for the extruder tutorials. I’d love to see how you made the pitcher and other pieces. Loving the vlog so much.
Extruder tutorials coming soon… maybe this week!
When you use the MOP can the mug still be washed in the dishwasher? I know the gold luster can't be, am wondering about these. It is a great idea for fixing an "eh" piece.
The problem with the dishwasher is that the detergent is so harsh it can etch the luster over time. So yes you can put MOP pieces in the dishwasher and I do but just know they may lose some of their luster over time.
Those extruder dies look so fun!
They were so fun to use. I have many of them in my studio but not the large ones. They have the most unique designs!
Thanks Jessica for sharing your studio and the mugs! They are so shiny and beautiful.
Thank you! Mother of Pearl makes such a difference!
I visited them a few years back, great place. Everyone was very helpful.
They were the best! I can’t wait to go back!
